Practicing gratitude (appreciating the good that already exists in your life) is a highly rewarding practice. One way to do this is to keep a “gratitude journal”. Studies have shown that maintaining a gratitude journal has multiple benefits— better sleep, fewer symptoms of illness, increased levels of happiness.

Here are some things that will help you get better at gratitude:

  • Be specific and personal. Mention details, don't hold back.
  • They don't have to be 'big'. Could be the sandwich you ate for breakfast
  • Relive the experience as you write it. Don't write just for the sake of it.
  • Choose depth, not breadth. Unlike this checklist, really elaborate on what you're grateful for.
  • Record life's surprises. Unexpected events create a stronger sense of gratitude. Document them!
  • Don’t overdo it. Write once/twice a week.
